Unit-Based Learning: Building Genuine Writing Ability, Not Just Surface Techniques At Austin, our writing courses follow a Unit-Based Learning model, dividing each unit into four progressive stages to help students go beyond writing skills — enabling them to comprehend, analyse, and develop their own ideas effectively.
Students are exposed to classic or high-quality writing samples to intuitively grasp the target writing style. For example, when studying modern poetry, students read poems with various stylistic approaches; when learning persuasive writing, they analyse high-scoring essays to understand how arguments are constructed.
Through group discussions, students engage in divergent thinking around key issues from the reading material. Teachers guide students to express their viewpoints from multiple angles, encouraging independent thinking rather than enforcing a single “correct” answer. When inappropriate or extreme views arise, teachers provide constructive redirection to help students develop sound values.
Students create original work based on what they’ve learned, with room for individual expression regardless of ability level. By sharing their writing aloud, they gain insight from others and learn to evaluate and refine their own work.
