General Mathematics suits students who want a reliable mathematics score without the time cost of Mathematical Methods, and students who take it alongside Methods as a safety subject for their top four. It is a single-year Unit 3&4 subject, so it can be started in Year 12 without prior Unit 1&2 study at the same level.
General Mathematics does scale down relative to Methods and Specialist Mathematics. In practice a high raw score in General Mathematics can still out-perform a mid raw score in Methods once scaling is applied, which is why we treat it as a strategic choice rather than an easier one. We give an honest read on whether it belongs in a student's subject mix during the consultation.
Our programme follows the VCAA study design across data analysis, recursion and financial modelling, matrices, and networks and decision mathematics, with the corresponding Unit 1&2 groundwork for students studying it over two years. Teaching is structured around the outcome statements each SAC is written against.
Students receive four Austin-exclusive textbooks, weekly structured homework, four or more stage and topic assessments, full-length Austin mock exams, SAC-focused revision sessions, recorded lessons for review, and unlimited academic Q&A support.
All three run as ability-streamed weekly group classes with the same homework system and mock-exam cycle. The difference is content depth and pace. Many Austin students take General Mathematics alongside Mathematical Methods; our academic team helps map which combination best supports the student's target ATAR.
Yes. Classes run in person at our Melbourne campuses and as live online lessons across Australia, with the same curriculum, materials, homework system and teaching team in both formats. Lessons are recorded for review after each class.
