2024 Study Design

VCE Physics 2024 Study Design: What Changed and Why It Matters

The current VCE Physics study design introduced significant changes for Units 3 and 4 from 2024 (Units 1 and 2 were updated from 2023). If you are using past exam papers from before 2024, be aware that some content has moved, been added, or been removed. The most important changes are summarised below.

SACs now 50%, exam 50%

Unit 3 SACs increased from 21% to 30%. Total SAC weight increased to 50%, and the exam decreased from 60% to 50%. The number of SACs was reduced from six to five.

Special relativity moved to Unit 4

Einstein's special theory of relativity (time dilation, length contraction, E=mc²) moved from Unit 3 AOS 3 to Unit 4 AOS 1, alongside wave-particle duality.

New force terminology

"Force due to gravity" (Fg) replaces "weight". "Normal force" replaces "reaction force". Forces are described using "force on A by B" notation. Examinable from 2024.

Unit 1 (from 2023) — How is energy useful to society?

  • AOS 1: Light and heat — electromagnetic waves (new), Wien's Law, heat transfer, nuclear energy
  • AOS 2: Nuclear energy — radioactive decay, fission, fusion, E=mc²
  • AOS 3: Electricity — circuits, series and parallel, electrical safety

Unit 2 (from 2023) — How does physics help us understand the world?

  • AOS 1: Motion — Newton's laws, momentum, projectile motion, energy
  • AOS 2: Options (astrophysics, climate change, forces on structures, and others)
  • AOS 3: Scientific investigation

Unit 3 (from 2024) — How do fields explain motion and electricity? (exam basis)

  • AOS 1: Motion in two dimensions — Newton's laws, uniform circular motion (horizontal and vertical planes), projectile motion, impulse (FΔt = mΔv), conservation of momentum, satellite orbits
  • AOS 2: Fields — gravitational, electric and magnetic field models; the inverse square law; F = qE, F = qvB, F = nIlB; DC motors (split ring commutator); synchrotrons (uniform circular motion)
  • AOS 3: Electricity generation — Faraday's Law (induced emf), AC and DC generators (slip rings vs split ring commutators), photovoltaic cells and inverters (new), transformers, transmission losses, AC RMS voltage

Unit 4 (from 2024) — How have creative ideas revolutionised thinking in physics? (exam basis)

  • AOS 1 — Light as a wave: Young's double slit experiment (constructive and destructive interference), standing waves, diffraction (gap width ratio)
  • AOS 1 — Light as a particle and matter as waves: the photoelectric effect (E = hf), de Broglie wavelength (λ = h/mv), electron diffraction, atomic emission and absorption spectra (moved)
  • AOS 1 — Special relativity (moved): Einstein's two postulates; the Michelson-Morley experiment; proper time (t₀) and proper length (L₀); time dilation and length contraction; real-world examples (muons, GPS, particle accelerators); E₀ = mc²

How to Get 40+ in VCE Physics: 6 Strategies That Work

Learn the 2024 terminology from day one

Using "weight" instead of "force due to gravity", or "reaction force" instead of "normal force", can cost marks in exams. Adopt the new terminology immediately and practise it in every written response.

Master Unit 3 fields before Unit 4

Unit 3 AOS 2 (gravitational, electric and magnetic fields) forms a large proportion of the exam and is conceptually demanding. Spend significant time on this topic early in Year 12 before moving to Unit 4 content.

Practise applying concepts to unfamiliar scenarios

VCE Physics exams rarely ask students to simply recall a formula. Most questions require applying physics principles to novel contexts. Practise identifying which concept applies to each scenario before you start calculating.

Write physical reasoning in words, not just equations

Extended response questions require students to explain physical reasoning clearly. Practise writing responses that explain why a formula applies, what the variables represent, and how the result relates to the physical scenario.

Complete past exams under timed conditions

Time management is critical in VCE Physics. Complete full past exams under strict timed conditions from at least six weeks before the exam. Use 2024 and later papers for Units 3 & 4 to ensure alignment with the current study design.

Treat Unit 3 SACs as a major priority

Unit 3 SACs now contribute 30% of your final study score — the highest single component. Prepare for each Unit 3 SAC with the same rigour as the end-of-year exam. A strong Unit 3 result creates a significant buffer.

VCE Physics is the most directly relevant science subject for engineering pathways.
